What plays work for 2nd graders?
Keep the K–1 running game (Run Right/Left, sweep) and add your first two passes: the Slant and the Out Route. Both need only one cut and a five-yard throw, which matches what a 7–8 year old QB and receiver can reliably do. Five plays total, installed in that order.
Run The Sweep
What happens: Runner takes the handoff already moving toward the sideline, wins the edge, then turns upfield.
Why it works: Defenses this age overload the middle. Width is open space.
Coaching tip: The runner must reach the edge before turning, drill it with the outside handoff drill before calling it in a game.
Pass Slant
What happens: Receiver runs 5 yards straight, then cuts diagonally toward the middle. QB throws as the receiver breaks.
Why it works: Short, quick, and the receiver is moving toward the ball, the easiest completion in football.
Coaching tip: Teach the timing as one word: “break-throw.” The ball leaves when the cut happens, not after.
Pass Out Route
What happens: Receiver runs 5 yards and cuts sharply toward the sideline. QB throws to the sideline shoulder.
Why it works: It moves the ball away from every defender in the middle, and an incompletion lands safely out of bounds.
Coaching tip: Install after the Slant. The plant foot is the hard part, the route basics drill builds it.
Installation order across the season
- Weeks 1–2: Run Right / Run Left (see first play)
- Weeks 3–4: The Sweep
- Weeks 5–6: The Slant
- Weeks 7+: The Out Route, if the Slant is clean
Resist the urge to speed this up after a good week. The playbook is full when the season ends, not before.
Quick answers
When should my QB throw versus hand off?
Make it your call from the sideline, not the QB’s read. One play, one job. QB reads enter the picture in 3rd–4th grade.
What if we have no kid who can throw?
Run the ball and develop two QB candidates in practice with short, soft throws. A 5-yard wobble that completes beats a beautiful spiral that doesn’t.
How do I get more kids the ball?
Rotate the runner and receiver by possession, not by play, kids get full drives in a role, you keep substitutions sane, and the rotation formula handles fairness.
