How do I make sure every kid gets equal playing time?
Rotate by possession, not by the clock. A rotation is one trip on the field: your offensive series and the defensive series that follows. Write down who is on the field for each rotation before game day, keep a running count of how many rotations each kid has played, and even playing time stops being something you promise and starts being something you can prove.
The five-minute version
Twelve players and six rotations of seven is forty-two spots, so six kids play four rotations and six play three. Fill the sheet in on a practice day, keep the tally beside the roster, and check it before the last rotation. Every coach intends equal time; game-day adrenaline disagrees. Does equal time apply in the playoffs?
Yes, same rotation. The one exception, all season, is the last two minutes of a one-score game. Kids learn fairness isn’t conditional, and honestly, the win-probability cost at age eight is smaller than the trust cost of benching half your roster.
What if a kid misses practice, less game time?
Pick a policy early and put it in writing. At these ages most coaches don’t dock game time for missed practice (family calendars, not kid choices), but consistency matters more than which policy you pick.
How do I track it during the chaos?
You don’t track, you pre-wrote. The grid says who sits in rotation five; you just read it. That’s the entire trick.
