Quick answer

What plays work for 6 year olds?

Three plays: Run Right and Run Left (one handoff, one direction), the Center Sneak (the forgotten kid keeps it), and the Delayed Handoff (freeze, then go). Each has exactly one decision, and it’s the coach’s. Passing plays mostly fail at six, completions arrive in 2nd grade.

Why simple wins at six

A 6-year-old mid-play is processing: which way is our end zone, where’s my flag, is my mom watching, why is the grass like that. A play with two decisions exceeds the hardware. One handoff in one direction fits.

What about passing?

Keep throwing in practice, Catch and Run builds it, but expect game passes to start connecting around 2nd grade. There’s no developmental rush; touches and fun are the curriculum at six.

Quick answers

How many plays can a 6-year-old remember?

One at a time, re-explained in the huddle every time. Keep three in the playbook for variety across the season, not within a drive.

Should every kid get to be the runner?

Yes, rotate by possession. The play is simple precisely so any kid can star in it.

When do these plays stop working?

Around 2nd–3rd grade, defenses learn to swarm the handoff, exactly when you add the sweep and the first pass.
